2025 EV Sales Showdown: Tesla Model Y Holds Crown, Model 3 Fights for Podium Against Rising Stars!

TL;DR: Tesla's Model Y is still king of the EV hill in 2025, but its buddy, the Model 3, is in a bare-knuckle brawl for its podium spot against a wave of hot new Chinese models like the Xiaomi SU7 and Geely Xingyuan. The global EV model market is shifting, fast!

Meta: Tesla's Model Y remains the world's best-selling EV in 2025, but its Model 3 is facing fierce competition from rising Chinese models like Xiaomi SU7 and Geely Xingyuan, threatening its podium spot.

Alright, alright, settle down now! We're talking about the best-selling EV models of 2025, and let me tell you, it's a real rollercoaster! Tesla’s Model Y, that ubiquitous electric SUV, held onto its crown as the world's best-seller for the fourth year in a row. That's a dynasty, folks, a real electric empire! But its sibling, the Model 3, which also had a strong showing, is in for a fight. The Chinese market is spitting out new, ambitious models faster than I can tell a joke, and they’re coming for that podium spot!

In December, thanks to a monster month in China, Tesla’s Model Y grabbed the top spot, followed by the Model 3. But here’s the kicker: both models saw sales drop year-over-year. Meanwhile, BYD's Qin Plus soared thanks to steep discounts, and the new Xiaomi SU7 came in at a shocking 5th place globally, right out of the gate! Below that, the BYD Armada is looking a little less dense, with new players like the FCB Tai 7 and the AITO M7 (more full-size SUVs!) muscling their way in. Even NIO’s new ES8, a large SUV, made it to 14th globally – a first for the Chinese startup. It’s a full-on electric vehicle smorgasbord out there!

The Young Guns are Comin'

The second half of the table is buzzing with fresh faces too. The MG 4 is turning out to be a hit, with over 18,000 deliveries in December. And BAIC, a name you might remember from way back when, saw its new compact hatchback, the Arcfox T1, debut at 17th with a record 17,170 sales. They're hoping this little guy helps them reclaim their past glory. It’s like a bunch of hungry young pups challenging the old guard; they're coming with fresh energy and aggressive pricing!

And check this out: the Vietnamese VinFast Limo Green, a midsize MPV (disguised as a crossover, smart!), delivered over 11,000 units in December after just a few months on the market. That's a serious contender for export markets – the world needs more practical MPVs, not just yachts on wheels, if you ask me! Renault’s new 5 and Alpine A290 twins, and Skoda’s Elroq also had record months in Europe. Everyone's bringing their A-game!

Tesla's Ex-China Dominance (For Now)

Now, if we take China out of the equation (because that market is just doing its own thing), Tesla’s Model Y is still a distant leader, followed by the Model 3. The BYD Song and VW ID.4 are making a strong showing there too, proving their global appeal. The BYD Seagull (aka Dolphin Mini) is also becoming BYD's passport to many export markets. But even outside of China, the Model 3's grip on the second spot is looking shaky as new models emerge.

And for my truck and sports car fans, the electric pickup market crown went to the Ford F-150 Lightning (31,536 units), barely beating out the BYD Shark 06. The Tesla Cybertruck, with 21,284 units, came in third. In sports cars, the Dodge Charger took the title, followed by the exotic Ferrari 296 and Mercedes CLE. Who knew a Charger could be so exotic? It's a testament to the fact that EVs are not just efficient; they can be downright thrilling!

What's Next

While the Model Y is likely to hold its top spot for a while, the Model 3's position on the podium is definitely in jeopardy for 2026. Expect intense competition from new Chinese models to continue shaking up the global rankings. This dynamic market means consumers will have an ever-growing array of electric options, driving innovation and competitive pricing across all segments.

That's the truth! Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go see if my old tricycle can be electrified. Goodnight everybody!
