Toyota Hilux Goes Electric: The Global Workhorse Gets a Green Upgrade in Europe

TL;DR: Toyota's legendary Hilux pickup, a global workhorse, just got an electric makeover and made its European debut! Packing a 59.2 kWh battery for up to 160 miles of range and some serious off-road smarts, this BEV is a big step for Toyota. Don't get your hopes up, America; this green beast probably ain't crossing the pond anytime soon. Some good things are just for overseas, baby!

Meta: Toyota's iconic Hilux pickup truck is making its European debut as an all-electric BEV, offering a 59.2 kWh battery, 160 miles WLTP range, and advanced off-road features.

Alright, alright, listen up! You know the Toyota Hilux, right? That truck that's tougher than a two-dollar steak? Well, it just went electric, baby! Toyota rolled out the Hilux BEV at the Brussels Motor Show, marking its first public appearance in Europe. This ain't just some concept; it's the real deal, an all-electric version of one of the world's most popular pickups, with over 27 million sold worldwide. So, if you thought Toyota was sleeping on EVs, think again. They're just taking their sweet time, like me waiting for my next stand-up gig.

The Hilux Goes Green

This new electric Hilux keeps that rugged, body-on-frame design, but now it's got that silent, powerful electric drive. It's powered by a 59.2 kWh lithium-ion battery, giving it a WLTP range of up to 257 km (that's about 160 miles). In the city, where you're not pushing it as hard, it can stretch to 380 km (236 miles). It's got an all-wheel-drive system with a combined 473 Nm of torque, ready to haul 715 kg (1,576 lbs) and tow up to 1.6 tons. That's serious work capability, electric style.

But it's not just about the numbers. The Hilux BEV is Toyota's first model with electric power steering, which sounds minor but is a game-changer for off-roading, reducing kickback on rough terrain. They even developed a new Multi-Terrain Select System specifically for their EVs, optimizing settings for maximum control. With 212 mm of ground clearance and the ability to wade through 700 mm of water, this truck means business, on-road or off.

Interior Tech and the US Question

Inside, you're getting Toyota's latest design, with dual 12.3-inch driver and infotainment screens. It's all sleek, modern, and functional, just what you'd expect from a twenty-first-century workhorse. The Hilux BEV is set to launch in Europe in April, followed by a Hybrid 48V variant in July. So, the Europeans are getting their hands on this bad boy soon.

Now, for my folks in the US, don't get your hopes up too high. The Hilux traditionally isn't sold here, and with all the policy shifts and Ford's F-150 Lightning pivoting to an EREV version, it's unlikely Toyota will bring this electric Hilux to the States anytime soon. It's a bummer, but sometimes, you gotta accept that some things just aren't for you, like kale. No thanks, I'm good.

What’s Next

As the Hilux BEV rolls out in Europe, its real-world performance and adoption will be closely watched. Its success could encourage Toyota to accelerate its EV pickup plans for other markets, or at least solidify its strategy for regions where compact, capable electric trucks are in demand. The hybrid variant will also offer an interesting alternative for those not ready for full electric.

So, if you're in Europe and need a truck that works hard and plays green, the electric Hilux is coming. And that's a fact you can bank on, Jack!
