BMW Joins the Party! Tesla Superchargers Now Welcoming the Bavarian Crew!

TL;DR: BMW EV owners in the U.S. can finally plug into Tesla’s Supercharger network, making them the 15th automaker to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS). While new models will get native ports, some older ones might need a pit stop at the dealer or a specific adapter, so check your ride!

Meta: BMW EV owners in the U.S. now have access to Tesla's Supercharger network, making it the 15th automaker to adopt NACS.

Well, well, well, look who finally decided to join the party! BMW, those fancy folks from Bavaria, just announced that their electric vehicle owners in the U.S. can now officially tap into Tesla's vast Supercharger network. That makes 'em the 15th automaker to throw their hat into the NACS ring this year. It's like the biggest potluck dinner for EVs, and everyone's bringing their own charger – or in this case, sharing a very popular one!

Plug-In, Power Up, and Maybe Patience

Now, it ain't quite as simple as just rolling up and plugging in for everyone. Current BMW EV models like the i4, i5, i7, and iX can connect to NACS-equipped Superchargers, but you might need a special, BMW-approved adapter. And don't get too excited, those official adapters aren't dropping until Q2 2026. Until then, third-party options might get you by, but BMW's giving a nod to Lectron for now. Some older models, like the first-gen i3, are only compatible with Tesla’s “Magic Dock” locations, which have the CCS-to-NACS adapter built right in. So, do your homework before you hit the road!

Good news for the future, though! BMW plans to integrate native NACS charging ports directly into new electric models starting with the 2026 i5 M60, followed by other vehicles like the next-gen iX3. So, soon enough, you won't need to play adapter roulette. And for some lucky 2024-2025 models, Plug & Charge support is already live, meaning you just plug in, and the car handles the billing through your Shell Recharge account. No fumbling with apps, just pure charging bliss.

The NACS Revolution Rolls On

This is a big moment, not just for BMW, but for the whole EV industry. With BMW on board, the momentum for NACS as the North American standard is undeniable. Ford started this whole thing, and now nearly every major player, except for Stellantis – bless their hearts, they're still waiting in the wings – has signed up. It means less range anxiety for drivers and a more unified, efficient charging experience for everyone. More charging options means more freedom, and who doesn't love a little more freedom?

This expansion means BMW drivers now have access to over 180,000 public charging points across North America, including roaming partners like Electrify America and EVgo. It's a network so big, you could probably charge your car on the moon if it had a Supercharger up there.

What's Next

Keep an eye out for those official BMW NACS adapters in 2026, and watch for new BMW models rolling off the line with native NACS ports. This widespread adoption is going to streamline the charging experience for everyone, making EV ownership even smoother. The question now isn't if other automakers will join, but when the last holdouts will realize they're missing out on the biggest party in town.

So go on, BMW drivers, go forth and charge! Just don't forget your adapter. Whoopi!
